Fermoy RFC 16 – 14 St Senan’s RFC

Fermoy kept their promotion hopes alive with a nail-biting win over Clare side St. Senan’s.

Fermoy started very well and were awarded a penalty just outside the visitors 22 after a great break by Twomey who ran the ball from inside his own half off loading to Dylan Foley on the Senan’s 22.  From the ruck Darragh O’Sullivan spotted a gap but was just held up before the line.  Twomey’s penalty kick just missed.  Fermoy were back inside the Senan’s 22 for the next 10 minutes but failed to turn their territory into points.  It was the turn of the visitors to enjoy a spell of territory and they  had Fermoy camped inside their own 22 but Fermoy’s defence held firm and cleared their line.  Senan’s opened the scoring with a try after going wide from a scrum to score in the corner.  Back came Senan’s and had Fermoy defending their line but again the Fermoy defence held firm with some excellent work Darren Hartnett, Patrick O’Donoghue and Jack Fox.  Just before the break Senan’s extended their lead with a penalty.

Half time 0-8.   Twomey put Fermoy on the scoreboard with a penalty following an excellent line out.  Jamie Ahern took the ball at the tail of the lineout, popped it down to O’Sullivan who broke the Senan’s line only to be tackled just short of the line.  A penalty was then awarded from the following ruck for offside.  Fermoy then took the lead with a Twomey try in the corner which he converted with a fabulous kick from the touch line.  Fermoy were hammering at the Senan’s line; all the Fermoy backs ran to the open side bringing most of the Senan’s defence with them.  Eoin Lacey shipped the ball to Twomey who ran down the blind beating two defenders, 10-8.

Senan’s retook the lead with a penalty which was cancelled out by a Twomey penalty shortly after, 13-11.  Going into the last 10 minutes it was anyone’s game, the visitors went back in front with a penalty and again Fermoy responded with a penalty of their own 16-14.  Senan’s attacked again making their way inside the Fermoy 22, the Fermoy defence came out on top again with a massive double hit from O’Sullivan and O’Donoghue forcing a penalty to Fermoy who kicked the ball dead to take the win.  Both sides showed immense defence defending their lines numerous times throughout the game.
