Fermoy Triumph over Kinsale in Clubs Challenge Shield

  • Nov 23,2022

Fermoy RFC 37-24 Kinsale RFC

Fermoy booked their place in the semi final of the Clubs Challenge Shield with a well deserved home win against Kinsale. Played in ideal conditions the game served up 8 tries in a good flowing game of rugby. Ben Twomey opening the scoring for Fermoy with an early penalty after some excellent pressure by John McCarthy and Rob O’Flaherty in mid field. This was the start of an impressive 22-point haul for Twomey. His left boot was red hot all game finding touch with some excellent kicks. Dylan Foley extended the lead running on to a perfect cross field kick from Petey Clancy to score the opening try of the game which Twomey converted. Kinsale replied with a converted try in the corner from a maul by their forwards. Ian Pratt looked to have Fermoy’s second try of the game only to be deemed held up over the line. Kinsale went long down the middle of the pitch from the goal line drop out into the waiting arms of Twomey, it looked like he was going to run but he paused and slotted a sweet drop goal right between the posts 10 meters inside the Kinsale half. Another Twomey penalty brought the score 16-7 at half time. Pratt finally got on the score sheet crossing over from close range again Twomey converted.

Jamie Ahern, Bobby Ryan and Darragh O’Sullivan carried well all game giving scrum half Eoin Lacey a great platform to release the dangerous Fermoy backline.  A quick Twomey tap and go just inside his own half caught the Kinsale pack napping, running down the line he still had two defenders to beat, stepping inside the first defender and back out to beat the second to cross from Fermoy’s 4th try of the game, once again Twomey converted. Kinsale were now trailing by 30-7 and they threw caution to the wind and started to throw ball around from all areas of the pitch. This paid off and they scored two tries to bring them back into the game 30-19. However, an intercept try from Dylan Foley on the half way line eased the Fermoy nerves with Twomey converting to extend the Fermoy lead to 18 points. The visitors scored the last try of the game for a final score 37-24.
